When a Whole Community Waited for a Son That Was Never Theirs – The Kanu Nwankwo Rumour That Broke Okija’s Heart
Back in 2011, when social media was still new and only a few people were online, one of the most surprising and widespread rumours swept across Igboland.

According to the rumour, legendary Nigerian footballer Kanu Nwankwo was said to be from Okija in Anambra State, and not Arochukwu in Abia State as widely known. The rumour even included a specific date when Kanu was supposedly coming home to “reconnect with his roots” in Okija.
Without verifying the information or reaching out to Kanu himself, the entire Okija community swung into full celebration mode. A grand reception was planned. People cooked rice, Utara, yam, and even ukwa. Those in the diaspora travelled back home. Friends and in-laws were invited. The stage was set.

But on the much-anticipated day, after hours of waiting and excitement, Kanu Nwankwo never showed up.
Disappointment filled the air as people gradually returned to their homes—confused, embarrassed, and shocked.
Later that year, Ugwumba TV contacted Kanu to clear the air. In his response, Kanu expressed shock at the rumour. He confirmed he had no links whatsoever to Okija—neither paternally nor maternally. He said he too heard the story, but couldn’t trace how it started. He described it as one of the strangest stories he has ever heard in his life.

Just goes to show how powerful rumours can be—especially in the early days of social media!
